Are Vitamin D and D3 the same?

Are Vitamin D and D3 the same?

Great question! So Vitamin D actually comes in two forms - D2 and D3. D2 is ergocalciferol and D3 is otherwise known as cholecalciferol. Both are fat - soluble vitamins essential for bone health, immune function and strong, healthy teeth. They both help the body to absorb Calcium. Unfortunately we just can't get enough D2 or D3 from foods so we have to take a supplement.

So what is the difference between D2 and D3? How is Vitamin D made and which should I take as a supplement?

Vitamin D2

Vitamin D2 is derived from plants but it is much less stable, therefore it breaks down easily when stored or exposed to light and heat. It is not as effective at raising and maintaining Vitamin D levels in the blood compared to D3.

Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3 comes from animals or lichen - a plant like organism that grows on rocks and trees (making it suitable for vegans). It is much more stable and potent than D2 and lasts longer in the body. It is also more effective at raising blood levels of Vitamin D. It is therefore used in most supplements.

So in summary - Vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol) is the best form to take!

When should Vitamin D be taken?

We recommend Vitamin D is taken in the morning and with food but to be honest consistency is the key!
